Six Steps To A Successful Watercolor Painting

How To Watercolor - Beach Painting

                                                      Step One -  Beach Scene

how to watercolor step one

How To Watercolor

Make a simple sketch of your desired watercolor painting on watercolor paper. Don't want a lot of details, just a few basic shapes that reflect the goal of your painting. Make sure you don't put your center of interest in the center or the horizon water line across the cent of the paper. Also make sure you balance the design. This is where you focus on your overall composition. Visit www.RoyFuller.com for FREE instruction on composition, perspective, shapes, symbols, and design techniques. Go To Step Two

Step Two

How To Watercolor

Wet the paper from the top of the paper to the horizon level. Paint the background sky with Prussian Blue and Burnt Sienna. Leave a small white diagonal area in the sky for clouds. Vary the sky from top to horizon and from left to right with varying mixtures of paint. This gives the sky variety and depth. Variety is the spice of everything nice. Go To Step Three

Wet the ocean area with fresh clean water. Paint in the ocean with Ultramarine Blue and a little Burnt Sienna. Add some interlocking edges along the beach to make it interesting. Also vary the color slightly from top to bottom and side to side for variety and depth. Remember the colors will be lighter when the paper dries. Go to Step Four

How To Watercolor

Use different size big brushes and make the outline of palm tree branches in the sky on the right side. Now pick up some Gamboge yellow and Prussian blue and mix it on your palette. Add this to your palm branches area. You will need a dryer brush for this application with less water in the brush than normal. don't make all the leaves the same size. Use Big, Medium and Small trees. Go to Step Five

How To Watercolor

Paint the trees and huts with Bunt Sienna, Gamboge yellow and Prussian blue. Just add some paint clumps in varying shades and shapes. Use interlocking edges on the beach and into the sky. Now using a rounded dull pocket knife, scrape in the palm tree trunks using different sizes of trunks and lengths. Don't need to many, just a few. Now quickly before the paint dries, using a piece of a credit card scrape in the beach hut and sign.  Go to Step Six

       Step Six

  how to watercolor step seven

                                                  How To Watercolor

Paint the sailboat by adding a little color above the waterline with a brush and the mask scraping a little paint on a credit card Now add the reflection pools with Burnt Sienna and Gamboge Yellow. Wet the area first, then throw in some varying paint mixtures. Now take a dry brush and dust the area slightly giving you a smudge on the water surface for reflections and blending the colors together. Use an interesting shape or the reflection pool area. Always look at painted area as shapes and make sure they are interesting and have variety in shape, color and texture. Now add the beached boat by dragging a credit card through some paint on you palette and scraping color on the paper. Simple process but looks great. It's that easy!

Tips On How To Watercolor Quickly

   Roy Fuller, International Watercolor Artists

Tip 1 - Always get the paper as wet as you can before you begin applying watercolor paints. Depending on your environment you may only have 7 minutes before the paper starts to dry.

Tip 2 - Don't dilute your paint to the point of liquid.  For painting the beach, the foreground trees and bushes you want your paint to be like toothpaste. This will give you a little more control over the wet in wet process also.

Tip 3 - Paint from wet to dry, from large shapes to small shapes, and from light values to dark values. All this is done while the painting is drying in the first 7 minutes and also as you apply additional watercolor washes or details.

Tip 4 - Use larger brushes such as 3 inch, 2 inch and 1 1/2 inch flat brushes.

Tip 5 - Don't try applying the paint uniformly as this is not always pleasing to the viewer.  Instead add some variety in your brush strokes, the paint mixture, the size of shapes, the value of shapes, the number of shapes and your textures.

"Variety is the spice of everything nice" Roy Fuller 2001.

Tip 6 - Apply paint with your brush quickly.  Don't stay in one spot going back and forth, move around the paper in light, sweeping strokes and changing your direction continuously. It's the variety in your brush strokes you want to focus on.  Always use variety in your painting from the design to the completion. Always paint trees different heights, width, texture, values and colors. The same goes for rocks, mountains, people, clouds and everything else.

Tip - 7  Most artists do best when I paint on a slight backboard angle.  You can experiment slanting your board upward off a flat table by placing a book, etc. under the outside edge.  I usually paint with my backboard in the vertical position so my students can see better.

Tip - 8  Use as many design techniques as possible in your paintings. Visit www.RoyFuller.com for detailed design techniques and ton's of FREE information on watercolor painting.
