Bigony says he comes to watercolor late in life. He graduated from Texas A&M, Commerce, Texas with a minor in art and a master’s in business. He had always liked to draw ever since he could remember – mostly copying cartoons and drawing spaceships. In college the art fires were lit and he wanted to learn how to make beautiful paintings that expressed how he felt about this world.

“My first great interests were old barns and old vacant houses. The story of the barns and homes that were long gone fascinated me. I have been criticized by judges for my subject matter being too sentimental and regional. Something about the stark decay and loneliness, particularly in a dry golden grass field with black crows and old barn owls always about, gave the place emotions of mystery – maybe ghosts – certainly Halloween. Then there is the what-used-to-be that is gone now. How sad and how lonely! That is what I want to capture when I paint an old abandoned house or barn. I like to use high contrast and am careful to alternate darks and lights to make the painting have some punch from across a room.”

“When I want color, I do still-lifes or townscapes. I work in both watercolor and oils, but I am gravitating more and more toward the watercolor. I just love working with it. And when things are going right, a watercolor will almost paint itself.”

“My favorite artists are Ray Balkwill, Joseph Zbukvic, Stan Miller, David Taylor, Alvarro Castagnet, Amanda Hyatt, John Yardley, Charles Reid and Andrew Wyeth.”

“I would recommend that any artist who wishes to get their work out there should definitely set up a web-site. I have not sold a lot of work directly from my web-site, but I have received a lot of recognition which led to sales and commissio
